Artist's Comments

Please spay or neuter your pets. There are already way too many unwanted animals, and the life of a cat or dog isn't worth the excuses "I want my children to see the miracle of life," "Fixing pets takes away their personality," "It's too expensive," and so on (all real excuses I've come across).

Also, please adopt pets from shelters instead from buying them from stores or from a neighbor who didn't bother to get Mitzi fixed. This only promotes puppy mills and careless behavior on the part of pet owners. Besides, when you get your pet from somewhere else, you're giving up the chance to meet and love some of the sweetest animals out there, most of them unwanted and considered "too old" to find a home.

This piece really struck a chord with me. A couple of years back my aunt bought a dog, and then after a while the dog disappeared; it was only when I asked that she deigned to say that the dog had been given away because she was sick of it. Then recently she got a call from the local AVA saying that they'd picked up the dog on the streets somewhere and traced it to her, the original owner, through the microchip, but by that time the poor thing had been through nearly five owners. So the AVA told her she had a couple of options - to have the dog put down, or to take it back herself, rehome it herself, or to pay to have it kept for the rest of its life in a dog's home. It pains and shames me to say she decided rather quickly to have it put down. There's just not enough regard for animal lives, and not enough responsibility. And it doesn't help that a lot of people have the misconception that rescued shelter animals have "psychological problems" or "problems noone spotted" because I'm pretty sure shelters screen animals before they're put up for adoption.

Aw so cute!

This reminds me of the time when that guy couldn't sell his dog's puppies so he was going to shoot them. He set the gun down in front of the puppies before he was about to shoot them to get something ready or tie his shoe or something weird like that. Then, one of the puppies crawled over to the gun and, while playing with it, pulled the trigger and shot the guy in the foot.
